Every piece that leaves our workshop carries a piece of us — the precision of a laser, the wild beauty of high-voltage fractal burns, and the quiet satisfaction of making something that will outlast us.
How it started
A spark in the garage
The Knot and Nest began the way most good things do — by accident. A laser engraver, a rainy weekend, and a piece of scrap pine were all it took to ignite an obsession that would eventually become a business.
What started as a hobby quickly grew into something more. Friends wanted pieces for their homes. Strangers at craft fairs stopped mid-stride. It became clear that these weren't just decorations — they were conversation starters, heirlooms in the making.
Today, every piece is still made by hand in our small workshop. No assembly lines. No shortcuts. Just wood, precision laser work, and the kind of care that only comes from making something yourself.
Our craft philosophy
Slow made, intentionally
Laser precision
Our CO2 laser engraver lets us achieve detail and consistency that no hand tool can match — crisp lines, repeatable depth, and the ability to bring complex designs to life on any wood surface.
Natural materials only
We source locally milled hardwoods and reclaimed lumber whenever possible. The knots, the grain, the imperfections — those are features, not flaws.
Made to be kept
We don't make things to be replaced. Every piece is finished to last decades, designed to be passed down, and built with the kind of attention that makes it worth keeping.
Fractal fire
Lichtenberg fractal burning uses high-voltage electricity to trace branching patterns through the wood — results that could never be drawn by hand and are never the same twice.
The process
From raw wood to finished piece
Select & prepare
We hand-select each board for grain character, checking for the natural patterns that will complement the finished design. The wood is sanded through multiple grits until it's smooth enough to take a laser pass cleanly.
Design & set up
Designs are created digitally, refined, and dialed in with test passes on scrap wood. For custom pieces, this is where we work with you to get every detail right before committing to the final board.
Laser engrave or fractal burn
Laser engraving uses a focused CO2 beam to etch precise patterns, text, and imagery into the wood surface. Fractal burning runs high-voltage electricity through the grain, creating branching Lichtenberg figures that are completely unique to each piece.
Finish & protect
Every piece is finished with food-safe oils or protective topcoats depending on its intended use. Serving pieces get food-safe mineral oil. Wall art gets a matte topcoat that protects without adding plastic shine.
